Commission on Hazing Prevention

The Commission on Hazing Prevention leads WSU’s action‑oriented, research‑informed hazing prevention work. While HPAC focuses on compliance and oversight, the commission emphasizes programming, education, engagement, and prevention in practice.

The commission advances hazing prevention through proactive initiatives that elevate student voices, promote positive traditions, and translate evidence‑based frameworks into meaningful campus‑level action. Members collaborate across roles and campuses to design, deliver, and assess prevention efforts that reduce harm and support a culture of belonging.

The commission meets bi‑weekly and works in close coordination with HPAC, providing regular updates and helping connect institutional guidance to on‑the‑ground prevention efforts across the WSU system.

Commission Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing and delivering prevention programs using established prevention‑framework models
  • Leading Hazing Prevention Awareness Week across the WSU system
  • Elevating student leadership and promoting positive, values‑based traditions
  • Engaging with national initiatives and sharing findings
  • Supporting cross‑campus collaboration among students, peer educators, faculty, and staff
  • Creating a comprehensive WSU Hazing Prevention Toolkit and a shared library of prevention efforts
  • Establishing an annual systemwide timeline for hazing prevention education and engagement
  • Preparing updates for HPAC’s biannual meetings
  • Coordinating with the StopHazing Prevention Consortium, as directed by HPAC co‑chairs

Membership

The commission includes direct appointments of key stakeholders and an open application process for students, faculty, staff, and campus leaders. Members may participate in focused working groups dedicated to programming, education, and outreach.

Hazing Policies

Washington has a no-tolerance hazing law that requires an organization to lose recognition from the university if they are found responsible for hazing or the University violates state law. Please review the Washington Administrative Code (504-26-206) and/or the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 28B.10.900 - 28B.10.910) related to hazing and WSU's online hazing prevention training for more information.

For more information regarding expectations for student conduct, please see the Student Handbook for Community Standards.
